I built a Rat fuzz using the schema...
I built a Rat fuzz using the schematic off this page http://www.muzique.com/lab/rat1.gif
I like the way it sounds but I have an oscillation when I turn up the drive and/or tone control when my guitar is plugged directly into the Rat, if I use a direct send and return on my equipment for the Rat there is no oscillation. I used surface mount componets as I have in many other fuzz boxes and didn't know if spacing of the wiring and componets could be a problem with this particular fuzzbox

Re:
I think someone else had a similar problem. Did you try shielding the input and output wires?

Usually it's some type of layout problem.

No, the in and out wires are not shielded, I will make that change. Do you think the closeness of the surface mount componets might be a problem? It has worked for me in other fuzz boxes. Heres a pic of the circuit board. http://www.flipsideq.com/surface.html

First of all, very nice job!

I have never used surface mount components so I really can't say. Jack or R.G. might have more to say about this.

I think the Rat style pedals are prone to oscillation though. I remember getting it when prototyping.

Thanks Aron, that was the problem, unshielded wiring on the input and output, and thanks for the compliment. This hadn't been a problem with any other of the fuzzboxes I built using surface mount parts, but learning is an never ending process. FYI: I use surface mount parts because they are easier for me to come by because of my day job(the parts are literaly all over the floor) than conventional parts, thanks again

Wow, that was fast.

Cool that it works fine.

I always wanted to try surface-mount components but now in my old age my fingers are too shaky and my eyesight too poor. :)

The orientation of the leads around the opamp have to be placed so as to avoid crossing each other or running closely parallel. The input and output connections should be separated by a couple of inches.

Are you using an LM301?
