What transistors have worked in this circuit? I tried NTE 123's and had no luck.

I used the simple 2N3904 and for the FET J201.

If I can guess correctly, the units is passing the sound through but it's not doing any tremolo?  
 
Try reducing the 2.2M resistor between the collector and base of the oscillator transistor to the 680k to 1M mark. Alternately try replacing the transistor with those Aron is using.
