Luke Built Sweet Thing...doesn't sound or work like I think its supposed to!
I just built the sweet thing (final rev). Problem is that the pots for gain (the two 500k) don't seem to change the gain AT ALL. Its not high gain at all (it sounds like my Fender Deville at half gain). And its lacking the sustain I thought I'd hear. What might I look at first to fix this problem??? I also didn't used a 500k ganged pot...two 500ks side by side instead, but that shouldn't make a difference as long as they're both at opposite ends right? Please help, I'd really like to see what this baby can do.

Sounds like your drive pot (which really controls the level going into the 2nd stage) is not wired correctly. Make sure that it's grounded correctly. If you are not going to use a dual ganged pot, changed the 2nd 500K pot to a 5K in series with a 100 ohm resistor. Wire the 5K like a rheostat.

What FETs did you use?

Sounds like you have wiring problems.

In addition to what Aron said, if you're using 2 500K pots, make sure you use the 1k resistor in parallel with the 2nd pot.

I used the J201 like it specified. Directly from Radio Shack (they say J201 on them)
