Thick Creamy Distortion in a Can
Hello. Do you fellows ever actually use a stompbox to get your distortion? Maybe i have some warped definition of good tone, but i cannot ever get any good sounds from boxes. For Distortion i like the sound of a Mesa (single, dual, or triple rectifiers and nomads), the real thick kind, not too gainy and not too grainy. I really like the distortion sound that i made with my Line6 amp, but i have amps with no distortion, or very little, built in and they sound terrible when i try to add a box. I've used in the past Boss Ds-1, Dod pedals, and currently a Boss metal zone. The amp im trying to get a decent crunch out of is a Marshall Lead 100 MOSFET, and a '65 Blackface bassman (which obviously wont crunch, but a nice overdrive would be sweet). Is there some wierd thing i dont know about pedals that's making them sound bad? Maybe i am hearing the tone loss from not plugging straight in, but i doubt it. What do you fellows think?

I think you should build yourself Jack Ormans Mini-Tubes Pre Amp and use it to drive that Blackface!!! You'll be distortion heaven! Not to mention quite a sweet tone if the Bassman is in good shape.
If the M.T. pre amp has to much dist. for your taste, try a Booster 2.5 or a Sweet Thing.
Take care, Jered

You want an overdrive, not a distortion.

that was to the point.

If that's a compliment, thanks.

If a complaint... more help should be along shortly.

Have you tried cranking the output and turning down the clip on the fuzzboxen you have?

Maybe a couple like that in series?

i seem to get results similar to what i want with an EQ pedal set just boosting the signal in all the right places.

Do you want to tackle a roll-yer-own graphic where you set the number of bands, their width, and boost?

Or maybe a parametric EQ with multiple, overlapping bands?

There should be some key ideas on geofex or aron's board.
