effects on a trombone
I'm trying to figure out how to put an effects system on my trombone using a mic and my bass guitar amp and speaker. The problem is I don't know much about effects. What kind of effects would be best? What should I buy? How should I set it up? Anything anyone knows will help.

Thanks,
Chris

Maestro put out a guitar synthisizer years back that was fitted for wind instruments. The unit came with a device that fit between your horn assembly and the mouth piece. The device had a transducer built into it. I connected my wife's clarinet, from her high school days, and got some wierd and cool sounds.

If you are interested I know where you can get it for a fair price.

Does your bass amp have an effects loop?

Even with a loop, you'll probably need a microphone preamp - a casette deck will do if you're just experimenting.

For effects, I'd think moduation FX like chorus, phaser, flanger and delay would be wild. Distortion/overdrive FX would take you to some odd places. Got a guitar-player bud with some stompboxes to fiddle with?

Just don't plug the bass amp's speaker output into anything but a speaker (without detailed advice).

Should be fun!

I would say chorus, distortion, and delay would be MOST useful for bizzaro trombone mangulations. Don't forget the wah-wah. Wah-wah with trombone would be cool, I'd imagine. Gotta respect someone willing to do this!!!

I've heard wah on saxophones quite a bit, but on a trombone it would be really cool. You'd get pitch and frequency center modulation at the same time.

A PA would probably be much better for this application than a bass amp. Distortion will probably be a feedback disaster/nightmare, but chorus, reverb filtering and delay would be really cool.

I haven't pulled my bone out for a couple of years. -- maybe this is a reason to get going again.

to be perfectly honest I know nothing about the amp or effects (or even the guitar for that matter). My pastor gave me his old Kustom amp and a gigantic speaker to go with it. Not to sound dumb, but what is an effects loop? And what is a stompbox, too (I've seen that word a few times)? I know I'm ignorant, but oh well.

Just so I know, what all will I need (pedals, effects thingies, anything else?) I sound like a complete idiot, but I guess that's better than pretending I know what I'm talking about.

there are some books out there specifically on how to use different effects. You might want to start there.
