For digital delays, it would be hard to beat the Boss DD-3. No, it doesn't sound like tape echo, but the delays manage to be both clean and warm. Also, you can separate the dry and delay outputs (and if you do this, you have the option of EQing the delayed signal for less high-end without affecting the dry signal). Like other Boss pedals, the bypass is not hardwired, but bypass mode sounds very close to the original guitar signal. The Boss DD-5 has more features and is more expensive, but to my ears, sounds a bit sterile compared to the DD-3. That's my opinion, anyway. |

The Chandler Digital Stereo Echo cops the Echoplex tone very well, can also be run clean. It has a modulation section as well, for the wildest flange/chorus sounds on the planet. However, it's a rack unit. All my opinions, as usual. PTJ. |

For the money, the DanEcho is a steal. About $50 on ebay or Harmony Central. Everything from slapback echo to Floyd Like repeats, With an added Hi-cut to emulate tape. |

Got to agree with that. I borrowed one from a pal, and it is the ONLY echo pedal I've ever used that gets close to my WEM tape echo. I'm not sure what it is about them - but it is the only non-tape echo I've ever been able to use, the rest just sound wrong. |

I'll also put my two cents in for the Danecho (for the money). It somewhat pales in comparison to a tube echoplex tho...but what do you want for 50 bucks? For Analog Delays: I'll put my money on the Roland DC-10,20,30 series. The best sounding analog delays I've EVER heard. Cheap too if you can find them. I'm guessing it's similar to the later space echo series. The Ibanez AD-80 is (IMO) okay...I don't like it in comparison to the above. Some people like the maxon analog delay...I don't know if this is a copy of the AD-80 or the AD-9 or something else. Anyone? For Tape Delays: Not a tough choice. Tube Echoplex wins this one, no contest. For those wanting the sound w/o the noise! |
