Jimmy Page/Zeppelin Specific Effect Inquiry!
Hello all....Anyone have any idea as to what Jimmy Page used throughout the song "Achilles Last Stand" from the Presence album to get that cool phazey, swirly tone he uses in the intro and in the other spaces in the song? Seems he used the same effect for the intro to "Nobody's Fault But Mine"and the intro to "In the Evening" from In through the out door......Any ideas on this? Thanks John S.

I don't know how accurate any of this is.

Frank...this was very cool.....Thanks..It surprises me that, that one tone he gets is from an MXR Phase 90 though....Seems like there's more to that tone than just the MXR pedal? John...

It's not just the MXR, although they are much more useful than you'd think. I know he also used Copycats and echoplexes, and the main thing for the studio stuff - he was an awesome producer, he used excellent engineers, and he must have had some way cool studio compressors for some of those sounds.

I understand he used some pretty off the wall mic placement techniques and locations for recording too.

It's a little orange Phase 90. He used it live quite a bit during that era too. "Nobody's Fault" sounds more like actual tape flanging to me. Same with "In the Evening." If you get a Phase 90 you will be able to identify its sound easily. Check out some of those mid 70s boots for lots of use of the Phase 90, esp. on (of course!) "Achille's."

I RECALL READING that he phased the guitar tracks at the mixing board, thus giving him that real clean sound. but live he definately used the phase 90.

"Distance Is Depth" - Jimmy Page
Page used to place one mic in front of his amp as well as one behind to capture his sound. Other trivial recording info..."When The Levee Breaks" - drums recorded in the empty foyer of a mansion. The "delay/reverb" on the drum sound is natural. Never heard about the flanging at the board although it would not surprise me. John Paul Jones steered the ship during the "In Through The Out Door" sessions. Page was pretty smacked out of his mind at that point. Check out the solo to "South Bound Suarez"...he uses a BIG chunk of the "Whole Lotta Love" solo. Greatest quote I ever read about Page..."He's the only guitarist who can make a mistake, play it twice, and turn it into a riff."
