Patrick old transistor ID?
Cleaning up I came across a couple of RCA 2N384 and 2N388 transistors, still packaged. Also have a small bag of TI 2N1131 transistors. I could't find a cross referance for these. My guess is the 2N384 and 2N388's are fairly early transistors based on the numbers. Other than that I don't have a clue. Anyone out there have an idea if what these are? Thanks in advance for any info.

Both are germanium. The 2N384 is an RF device--I recall seeing it in an FM receiver circuit long ago. The 2N388 is famous to FFFs (Fuzz Face Fanatics), because the gain range is very favorable for getting sweet distortion.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to do a fuzz face! Haven't done one yet.

When you do your Fuzz Face, bear in mind that the 2N388 is NPN, not PNP.

The 2N1131 is a low gain Si PNP.

Yer welcome, and Stuart is correct, NPN. Also, you should measure the gains and try to find one of about 85 for Q1 and 130 or 135 for Q2.

If you want to see a design for the Bear Face, a FF clone (could easily be modded for NPNs and does some things that the standard FF design doesn't):

You have the transistors, but if you want toner transfers for the board, let me know.

I stuck them (all 2 of them) into my tester and came up with a gain of 89 and 120. A little outside your recommended figures, but I'll give them a try.
