Re: Rusty Nuts... Cheers everyone, I'll try and find some of that PB Blaster. The WD40 still hasn't made any difference - even after a week of trying. Maybe I'll have more luck with the industrial grade stuff. ... Ian |

I'm curious. I figure it's safe to assume that a device like this wouldn't be left out in the yard over the winter, so how DO nuts get rusted up, and what can be done to avoid or prevent such difficulties? Incidentally, many thanks to all for the wonderful compendium of penetrating oils. When you go into an electronics-related place, there are only so many fastener or friction-related situations anticipated, and a correspondingly small number of solutions to them. One forgets the diversity of belligerent fasteners in automotive situations, and the large number of soutions to those problems that might be found at an automotive place. The insight is appreciated. BTW, I was initial reluctant to examine this thread because I thought it had something to do with a sexually transmitted disease....but that's just me. |

Mark! I don't know how the nut got rusted on, but it's still not budging, though I haven't gotten round to trying out the above remedys yet. At a guess I'd say that some beer was spilled on it at a gig and was left to dry and eventually rust, or maybe not. I bought the pedal at a pawn-brokers for £70. .. Ian |

Ian, As a last resort I would use a Dremel type tool with a cutting disc and cut the damn nut off. Then clean the shaft and replace the nut. I admire your patience, if it were me I would have cut it off as soon as my wrench didn't work. Jay Doyle |

I've been using some stuff made by Hammerite called 'Kurust' which has done better than the WD40, but still not good enough - couldn't find any of the products suggested in the above posts, so that Dremel suggestion is looking better all the time. Now where did I put that hacksaw? ... Ian |

Just thought I'd post and let you all know that the 'Kurust' stuff worked a treat. Put a few applications on this afternoon and evening, and it finally played ball. Just in time to save it from the Dremel fate. ... Ian |

If you are sure this would not damage the surface, try putting a really hot soldering iron on the nut for a bit. When I can't get a nut loose on my car I torch the sucker and presto! Hopefully this won't damage the pot, but you could just replace that.. Jake |
