Ricky Hotbox w/ 6SL7 whaddia think?
have you guys seen the "super 6V6" amp on angela's web site? Its wired up so you can use either a 12ax7 or 6SL7 octal type for the preamp tube. this got me thinking, how about a hotbox-type preamp pedal using the same idea? I think I would just have two gain stages as opposed to the hotbox's four. what do you think? does it sound good?

Well, you could always add stages to get 4, BUT I would think the biggest drawback to this would be the notorius nature of 6sl7's to be extremely microphonic... so yu find a couple that aren't.. first time you stomp on it too hard, or drop your bag full of goodies, you might as well kiss the low-microphonics of your 'selected' tubes goodbye... in othre words, if we are talking rackmount studio fuzz box, that wont get banged around, I think go for it!.. but stompbox, i'd be REALLY scared to try that

hmm... I can't decide whether to make it "switchable" 12ax7/6sl7 or whether to go all out with 2 6sl7's. I have never used 6sl7's before, but I'm dying to build somthing with them. I've heard them described as "fat" and "smooth" compared to 12ax7's witch are "buzzy" and thin IMO without power amp dist. That's one reason I thought the 6sl7 sounded like it would be a better choice. do you think the 6sl7 would work well in a high gain preamp?
