Re: Let us clear his name..... Oh my Lord, not another Hi! As for as Eric Johnson goes, to a large degree his tone and playing are sort of an acquired taste. He seems sometimes to be trying to cop Jeff Beck's tones, but he's not quite getting it. OTOH, he sounds fine as himself. The constant slight delays are a little annoying sometimes, and gives him the sound that I think is being called "overprocessed" by some here, but think about this: it gives him the ability to play single-note runs with the tone of a *slightly* sustained note overlapping what comes after. A nifty way to harmonize with yourself. Plus the slight delays smooth of the sound of a distorted or high gain signal. As for the fuzz face, I'm really serious, he's got something else inside the box and the lid doesn't fit right is my take on it. I am pretty darn sure he's been using a '69 pedal instead of a fuzz bax per se; the one he used on "Tones" and "Ah Via Musicom" is a thing of the past. As for ears and what each individual player can hear or not hear, there's no way to tell, so going on about it doesn't make much sense. Some of the best guitarists I know don't care much for his playing and tone, others of the same calibre think he's the greatest since Hendrix and Jeff Beck. Ah, opinions, I wipe mine every day! Hi |

Hi Hi, Good point you make about his use of the echoplexes. Part of the smoothness of his lightning-fast licks, that someone mentioned, is the echo. NOT to say this guy isn't fast, precise and is able to do it tastfully. I love his playing. I tried to work my way through the intro to Cliffs of Dover once, just to see if there was any hope of me ever playing that fast. The results: If I had four or more hours a day to practice, I think I mighta coulda done it, on the other hand I doubt if I could ever get my fat little Viena Sausage fingers to move like that! His phrasing is truely unique and different from anything I've tried to cop off records. The other thing is if I played it with major distortion and slight echo, there seemed to be a glimmer of hope, much smoother and faster sounding than with dry sound. JD PS some of the chords he demonstrates on his first video are beautiful, but impossible for me to play, my hand/fingers are too small and just won't stretch out across 6 or 7 frets...bummer. The whole video is a little depressing in that respect |

Re: Let us clear his name..../tube driver? << As for the tubedriver placement- it's simple- that thing makes other pedals sound bad becuase of all the AC hum it emits. Try it sometime- it's a noisy pedal that needs to be carefully placed. It induces hum in everything. Though it's not on a seperate block of wood, my tubedriver is happy only in certain places on my pedalboard. >>uh oh, i just bought a tube driver off the i-net--should have it in 10 days. is this a good sounding OD pedal, despite hum problems? anyone experimented w/ diff. pre-amp tubes other than 12AX7? i play blues. any tips for using w/out terrible hum? thanks, bill |

You mean... like this? The trick to any sort of formatting is to embed HTML tags in your message. In this case, you want to put: <br> between your paragraphs. Reid |
