Brass and silicon
I just bought the issue yesterday, and when I saw that I immediately thought "How the hell could they have missed this!!??". Silicon Fuzz-Face?

The other thing that grabbed my attention was the reference to the tone shaping introduced by the composition of the cable connectors. No how in the hell does the plug composition make ANY sort of difference in the rig he describes? You could practically use linguine for cables and not notice high end loss in that sort of a system (although I hear that udon delivers tonal nirvana).

The Tube Driver on top of the Echoplex doesn't seem to have anything to do with using short cables, at least from the picture. Is it possible that we are looking at something resulting from the proximity of the tubes to a transformer or to a motor? Those of you who have actually seen the innards of an echoplex, where is the transformer located?

Finally, the placement of the devices on top of and behind each other was sort of interesting. The amp head location may very well have something to do with amp projection. Bear in mind that placing the head of top of the cab is effectively like extending the baffle upwards. And if moving your stereo speakers a few inches out from the corner can make a difference, I don't see why moving the amp head shouldn't. When we made our PA for a band I was in 20 years ago, we placed the tweeter bank and woofer in separate cabs. Seated atop the bass bin, the tweeters gave the usual shrill PA squawk. Lifting them up about a foot above the top of the bass bin dramatically turned it into a decent hi-fi speaker system; transparent, airy, the whole deal. The image produced by the spacing of the drivers and the removal of the bass bin as a "volunteer tweeter baffle" really changed things. Of anything noted in the article, the relocation of the amp head was the only thing that struck me as substantive. Of course how EJ *interprets* this particular voodoo is quite another thing.

Oh yeah, we held the PA together with huge rubber bands. (Had to get that in there. The speaker placement story is absolutely true though.)

The tube driver is on a angled platform above the echo. In the picture it looks like it is closer than it really is.

MC Re: what about the Fuzz Face?
The fuzz face I think was rebiult by Fulltone so you never know whats in there.

Re: what about the T.C. SCF
That is an older TC Chorus, it just looks purple in the picture in the article. As late as a week ago he was still using the older TC Chorus in his rig,

Re: Does anyone beside me feel sorry for the poor sob?
Fellas,
Beware of the loud close listening tests from amps as I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and spent the last 5 years out of bands because of tinnitus. I loved listening to different sounds from my amps and 5 years ago I over did the volume on a amp. It not only ruined me from the club circuit I used to play on. Its a nightmare to have . Just imagine a real high pitched wine in your head at all times and never stops. Kinda like a constant torture till you get used to it. Also you get other problems from hearing damage too. In a quiet room the sound level seems to get much much louder resulting in any small sound becoming like a ice pick in your brain. Then if you try to go listen to a loud band you get headaches from the loudness after about 30 minutes. These headaches last for days on end. Then go into a crowded room and try to listen to some one talk around all the other noise going on, Its impossible to hear what that person is saying. The moral is, I never thought it could happen to me? Guess again. It can happen to any one and this can permanantly ruin a persons musical career real quick. Be Carefull and dont blow your hearing because once its gone you will never get it back!!! NO SHIT.
