Vox Valve Tone

John De Luca	Vox Valve Tone Hi, Anyone have an opinion on the Vox Valve Tone? How does it compare to a TS9 reissue. I have a TS9 Reissue and am not totally thrilled with it. It seems to a bit compressed and isn't true bypass. I heard that the Vox pedal is very good and has bypass. Please any opinion counts!! Thanks, John

Tonecat	The Valvetone is clearer and less compressed in the mid frequency than the TS-9 I personally prefer it to the Tube Screamer. It is also true bypass which is a bonus It tends to have more of the Vox amps jangly highs

As far as I know, they aren't currently being made. Last year music stores were blowing them out at ridiculous (compared to what we're used to being charged, that is!) prices. They have the TS circuit, but additional (improved) bypass circuitry. They also are sturdily built and have a cool chromed case and pointer knobs. A problem I've noticed with mine is a loud snap when actuating the footswitch. According to Gus, who reverse-engineered this pedal, the switch is of questionable quality. He advised me to replace the cheap switch with a better grade. (I haven't tried that yet.)

I bought one new for $35, but actually haven't seen any used ones. They are a good pedal, and except for the switch, are built with excellent quality components. I don't know why they were on clearance sale, but it could be that some turned up with switching noise. (We're talking about the model V810. The V830 was on sale too, but although it looks identical, that pedal sounds more like a Rat than a TS. There's a store in my area that has a few new 830's in the pedal display case, but I'm uncertain whether its circuit could be easily modified to convert it to an 810.)

Gus	Most of the parts are very good IMO. The only problem area is the switch some are good and some pop.

John De Luca	Hi, Thanks for all the great info. Since they are not made anymore $64 delivered doesn's seem too bad, does it? I think I paid like 79 fro my TS9 when they reissued it. John

joe Z	"clearer and less compressed in the midrange" hits the nail on the head, but I would also add that they are a bit thin on the bass side of things. Intentional, I'm sure, just like the Vox amps we all love. Joe
