Re: That's right, no noticeable differences
The JRC4558's taste great but the RC4558's are less filling.

John Greene....You crack me up! :o)
I have them both....They both sound real good, but the JRC 4558 is noisier with more hiss....I'm waiting on some Mouser NJM 4558 D's..These are supposed to be just like the original JRC 4558 chips.....John...

I have modded a few ts 7's they have the jrc4558 in them It can sound very close to a ts808. Hint you need to replace more than just the 2 resistors.

Gus Re: TS opamp selection
Friend of mine have modded TS's with different IC's and caps.

FWIW the output resistor change can make a big difference with any new stock chip.

Different TANs "sound" different

JRC4558's are good at stock gain, I find I like other chips when I increase the gain.

A simple good test for the chips is turning the gain and tone full CW and playing into a tube amp with a good cable from the guitar to TS (good cable is a low cap one IMHO)

try lf353's lf412's ne5332's (I don't like tl072's) any stable gain of one dual that pins out the same.

I have stated in the pastmy fav chips, but it is fun to find the ones one likes the best.

Don't use NE5332: it's got larger power consumption, and when voltage of battery drops below threshold (dunno what it is for ne5332) it won't work at all. Also it's got internal back-to-back diodes between (-) and (+) inputs.

LFxxx and TL072's have JFET input stage and smaller power consumption. Also as the input impedance of TS is relatively high they might be a good option. Anyway, the original circuit is developed for bipolar input opamp. Since the days of JRC4558 there are now better bipolar audio opamps. Developed by NJM/JRC (new/japan radio company) is the NJM4560, a successor of 4558, which might be just the right part for TS. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll try next time when I order components from a retailer who's got them.

You can use the ne5332 with no problem I have modded ts's starting in 94/95 with ne5332's no problem. The led uses a good deal of the energy from the battery.

Opamps are only part of the TS-9 sound quality and
their differences are masked by mediocre electrolytic
coupling capacitors in the circuit.

Using 1uf film caps for buffer coupling plus an
'okay' low ESR 10uf electrolytic on the output will
make a noticeable and desirable difference in TS-9
sound quality.

The capacitors I mention aren't pricey audioPhlake
stuff and don't need to be. They only need to be
better than what Ibanez put in there.

As for the 5532, it works fine with fresh batteries.
Way Huge used it in their TS-9 clone, the Green Rhino.
After a point, it's a matter of taste.
