Our bass player uses one live and I think it sounds great!Kevin Baldes of LIT has been using one for about three months now and it has really improved his live rig also.  
For studio use its definetely possible, depends on what sound your looking to get.

 Sans Amp Bass DI, anyone got a schematic?
Check out Harmony Central, there are about 20 reviews for this item... All Of them Very Favourable, I might build one if I can find the schematic, it would be perfect for me as I just go straight into the Desk at church.
