Rangemaster/ Johnny Dallas
I heard briefly about an overdrive pedal that someone by the name of Johnny Dallas was making around 1964. Apparently that was popular in combination with the Blues Breaker amps were the rage. This overdrive box was supposedly used by Clapton and many others. Anyone know where I could find out more about these?? Is someone making them currently??

Check out www.geofex.com (Vintage Schematic section) for an incredibly excellent description of this simple circuit.

A big thanks to R.G. Keen for the The Rangemaster/Treble Blaster info.

It is a cool device - I just boxed mine up and am running it through it's paces. It actually works in an odd way with bass. Kinda gives that olde school SS bark. Also makes it possible to get right up into the guitar's freq. range.
If you don't want to (or can't) build one there is a boutique pedal company that makes reissues. I ferget what they are called tho

That would be Don Butler's "Rangemaster 65" pedal. About $130, as I remember. It's been a while.

There's kind of an interesting story about that. When I was doing the research to reverse engineer the Dallas Rangemaster, Don found out about it and wasn't happy. He not only claims "Rangemaster 65" as a trademark, he threatened legal action, even threatened to sic his brother in the CIA on me (no, I'm not kidding, I have copies of the stuff from the Vintage Guitar forum) as well as sundry other unsavory stuff. He never did follow through when I put up the articles, though... that I know of at least ...
I guess if I disappear someday, we'll ... mrrph... uurrgh..

That is an entertaining story, R.G. I guess in the end he figured that you are NO MAJOR THREAT without the inclusion of "vintage" capacitors in your parts list!!!

PS ok...for that comment, now I'M on that double-top-secret-special list the CIA has, along with R.G. and Elvis.

I have tried building a Rangemaster from RG's article, I had trouble with the fine tuning though, the device didn't seem to have the gain, I guess I'll have to wait for RG to open up shop again and get a transistor from him.

Regarding Don Butler what a Dickhead!

Mark.
