Fet Muff

Fet Muff
I bought 8 2n5457's from Allied Electronics. Finally built the Fet Muff and have no sound at all. I then decided to check the 2N5457's as described by Jack and found the following...

With 10K drain resistor each 2n5457 read between 1.5 & 1.6Volts with a 9.5V supply.

Had to drop down to 5k drain resistor to get around 4.5V's

Is this a bad batch of 2n5457's?

Mike, I've found that is typical of the 2N5457s that you can get these days. It's just a little under what I would recommend for the project but they will certainly work with 5k drain resistors. Max gain will be less than with something like an NTE458 or J201.

I changed the drain resistors to 5k and the pedal woke up! Sounds real nice! Unlike anything I've made so far. I'm now measuring 4.8V 4.4V 4.4V & 4.2V with an 8.7V supply. Will properly biased NTE-458's(can't find a source for the J201's) make that much of a difference in gain or tone?

Nice sound Jack,
Thanks again

The 5457´s in my Fet Muff sucked big time. I got 3-4V with a 12V supply. I changed the drain resistors to raise the voltage but now there is allmost no gain at all.
I´m gonna swap to NTE´s because this thing has great potential.

The NTE458s will probably add more gain and allow a heavier overdrive sound. The sound sample that is on my page is with 2N5457s but they were old ones I bought in the mid-80s and required 10k drain resistors.

Mine was the same with 2N5457 and I could not get it to distort very much (at best it sounded like a Rolling Stones rythm sound).

I tried J201, which is a lot better. I never finished it though, not my sound. I have two etched and drilled PCB's lying around. Maybe I should send them to Aron, circuitware you know ;-D
