| southpaw | Which pedal? Hi folks, I've been looking to approximate (or rather "nail") the sound of that famous "Voodoo Chile" song by Jimi and I can only come close at ear-shattering volume through my plexi and a strat. Would any of you know what pedal he used on that tune and what (pedals) today would approximate that great tone he got then and what settings would you use. Thanks in advance JS |

| anonymous | Everyone is looking for "this" or "that" tone, and expecting to find some magical combination that will nail it. Unfortunately, there are SO many variables involved that it would be impossible. Starting with the guitar, strings, pickups, setup, electronics....and then there's the teqhnique of the person, which no two are exactly alike due to hand size, playing technique, whether your on LSD or straight. Then you have the amps and speakers, of which each one is different, even if you have two of the exact same model. Then THAT signal is run into whatever mic(s), in whatever room(s), into whatever mixers and processing, set at whatever levels, and monitored over whatever speakers in whatever room. Then that signal is (or most likely) is squished a bit with compression to get it onto tape or whatever. THEN, you get the CD home and play it through whatever CD player, through whatever amp, through whatever speakers in a basically 2-dimensional soundstage. Since, when you play an amp in a room, it's 3-dimensional, and has full dynamics....you can never hope to "nail" the sound on the recording. All you can do is get a reasonable approximation of it, and it would be hard to tell what equipment you would have to use. Not an easy thing, trying to cop someone's tone. Sorry for the length. |

| Southpaw | So, anybody out there know or thinks he knows what pedal would best approximate that Voodo Chile sound? I'm not looking for an enginner's answer here. Just a pedal that would get me close to that tone. Anybody? |

A fuzzface and a vox846 italy |

| Southpaw | Thanks for your reply David. Although not concerned with the wah end of it, I do have a fuzz face and it seems to get just too fuzzy. I'm looking for that raw sound he got which doesn't sound like a fuzz face to me. |

| anon | Try an LPB-1 or MXR MicroAmp or other clean xistor preamp between guitar and amp - give your amp lotsa boost up front, but no "fuzz". |
