Re:trannies, hold up! Good data taking there. Looks like the magnetizing current really takes off about 140 to 150, which is where I'd expect things to start going wrong. At 150% of design rating, looks like the magnetizing current is over 300% of the full rating, and you didn't quite get to 200% of full rated. I'd expect putting 12VAC into a 6VAC winding to produce equally ugly results. One thing to remember in running small transformers backwards is that small transformers are commonly limited by the resistance of the primary winding, so the secondaries are wound a few volts higher than the rating. The open circuit voltage on the secondary is often 15-20% higher than the rated one for very small transformers. This is OK for driving them backwards, even gives you a little margin, but the voltage on the stepped-up side comes out lower than you expected because the winding ratios weren't what you expected. |
