Opinions: most over-rated effects
Since we have a thread on the most under-rated, which has proven somewhat interesting, I thought it might be entertaining to solicit opinions of the opposite - what is the most over-rated fx unit?

I'll throw gasoline on the fire and lead it off by saying that in my not-so-impartial opinion, the award goes to the TS-808 and its related brethren including the TS-9, TS-5, and so on. That mid-rangy muffled tone does nothing for me these days, (but I used an original TS-9 in live peformances for years before moving to better things).

my vote would probably be for my "woman tone" pedal, but the led's are rather interesting.

My vote also goes for the TS. Some people expect it to do miracles to their sound just because they've heard so much about it. I actually sold a TS-10 modded to TS-808 spec's to a young guy that got back after week saying that it sucked. I guess he was a newbie with a solid state amp and thought it would be the best for him just because everybody's talking about it.
OK, don't get me wrong, I really like the TS sound but I realize it doesn't work for everyone.

How 'bout almost ALL the old electro-harmonix stuff. It's no suprise to me that they went out of business (the labor union thugs story is good and probably true, but I don't think they were doin' too well in sales at the time either!) The way some people swoon over how great that stuff is, it's almost funny. Yes, I spent most of my time in junior high school daydreaming about all those cool pedals, but the sound of MOST of those pedals can be beat today by a current production box from one of several sources. Don't get me wrong, I'm not total against eh, most of it is good cheap entry-level stuff, that's it...definitely over-rated by many.

Happy Christmas!
Boss BF-2 Flanger. many say it is a very nice pedal and stuff, but I personally think that it sounds mainly over-out-of-tune and way to metallic. The problem with these kind of 'questions'/'interviews' is that it does not only depend on opinions, but als on how you wnt to use certain effects.

Have a nice Christmas!

CU, Kind regards,

If you happen to have one of these, you may want to consider adjusting the trimpot that sets the ceiling on regeneration. The description of "too metallic" suggests that you can't attain a sound with minimal regeneration.

Incidentally, I noticed in the schematic for the BF-2, that there is some soft clipping deliberately built in to the feedback loop, with a resistor in series with the diode pair. (Sound familiar, Jack?). I wonder how much that aspect produces the BF-2's particular tone?
