Re: op-amp Big Muff From your preferences it seems that you like "overdriver" and you don't like "fuzz". The big muff is not the kind of distortion you like. |

IC versions have one less gain stage and according to the website attached below, "do not sound as good". http://home.earthlink.net/~theehman/ |

Could be....but where does one draw the line between "fuzz" and "overdrive"? (and why do I have the feeling I'm going to be sorry I asked.... =Bob | |

Why do I have the feeling I'm going to be sorry I answered? I think you can't draw a crisp line to separate the two... it would be more like a "fuzzy" line (no pun intended). I like to call it a fuzz when it has not the intention of sounding like an amp. A fuzz purpose is to create a new tone that is distorted. Overdrivers on the other hand use soft clipping, filtering, etc. to try to sound like an amp. That's how I classify it for myself, surely others have different criteria. |

I have one & I like it.... BUT it's not a TS type of thing. It's more like the tones on ZZ Top's latest CD "XXX". "Amp crapping & about to explode" is more what it sounds like, which is good at times. It'll also produce nice mellow semi distorted sounds with the controls set right. Volume 12 o'clock, tone 9 o'clock, sustain 9-1 o'clock. If your amp is too clean & bright, it'll sound buzzy. Slightly distorted or high gain amp settings both sound good with the Big Muff on top of it. Steve B. |

Re: op-amp Big Muff i bought a BMP for use as a fuzzbass in about 1976. it was the four transistor model. my guitarist at the time liked it so much he bought one a few weeks later from the same shop. his BMP sounded like crap. being curious, we opened them up and found that i had a transistor model and he had an op-amp model. i guess this supports the theory that the op-amp models don't have the tone. |
