Sonuvabitch, we're in the dictionary! About as nontechnical a post as you can get here, but I just had to pass it along. I was just leafing through an Oxford Canadian English Dictionary in search of a very different word, when my eyes landed on the word "pedal". Damned if one of the meanings provided wasn't that of a "foot operated device for operating any of various sound effects on an electric guitar". Inspired by this discovery, I continued looking (the way you looked through the first big dictionary you ever owned when you realized it had "dirty words"). FUZZBOX: "a device which adds a buzzing quality to the sound of an electric guitar or other instrument" FUZZY: "(of a guitar sound, etc.) buzzing, not crisp or distinct" FLANGER: "a device that alters a sound signal by introducing a cyclically varying phase shift into one of two identical copies of the signal and recombining them" WAH-WAH: "a device for producing this effect on an electric guitar, consisting of a pedal and circuit box (imitative)" Missing, sadly, were "stompswitch", "chorus", "crunch", "clipping", "phaser". Maybe a larger dictionary has them. I figure once all the variations for sexual acts and words for sexual organs have been exhausted (like THAT will ever happen), lexicographers will get round to us. |

My favorite dictionary, the Macquarie (Australia) has: fuzz box: an electronic device attached to a sound amplifier which overloads the signal causing deliberate distortion of the sound. Also, phasing: a musical effect caused by mixing a sound with a delayed verrsion of the same sound, and varying delay slowly. Hmmmmmmm. |

| Hi |
I used to really like phasers, but I just could never get the hang of switching back and forth to the "stun" position... Hi |
