Re: Tube Distortion effect with real tubes?? How about making a clone of the old Alembic F2B preamp. It was produced about 20 years ago. It is basically a copy of a Fender blackface preamp. It originally was a stereo preamp, two identical preamps in a one rackspace unit. You could run a wire out of the left channel then into the right channel for some heavy distorted tones. BTW, it uses 12AX7A tubes. |

Dave & R.G. There's no information on the transformer, but I assume that the B+ is high voltage. This looks like a simple circuit. For some reason, I got it in my head that a circuit like this is BETTER to be laid out on terminal strips (or turret board or eyelet board) than on PCB. I think if I built this one, I would do it in a rack enclosure on terminal strips, I could easily mod it to my heart's desire and I think overall would be easier to put together and maintain than using a PCB. Anybody else have any comments on my way of thinking? JD PS - I'd really like to build this one, but my list of projects to do is way too long at this time. Maybe I could do a layout, if anyone's interested. |

Re: Tube Distortion - more links The TD from Jacks site Works better on 12V as said, the opamp has a pretty big impact on the sound (produces most of the distortion), I prefer a 4558. I also have the production-tubedriver schem, but can't seem to upload it, darn... Matchless hotbox McTube and another nice little box The latter three run on high voltage. |

Re: Tube Distortion effect with real tubes?? Yep, it's a high voltage supply. Interestingly enough, the Alembic is powered by a standard part that Stancor still makes. I think it's the P8914, and it has enough B+ and filament to power a couple of 12A?7's. It's about $17 as I remember. Not a stock item, though, so you'll have to contact Stancor or get a distributor to order one. |

I ordered that transformer from Alembic many, many years ago when I intended on building an F2B clone. I never got around to it. The transformer is stamped NT5198 then 7-85 below. The primary has four wires; black, white, green, and orange. The secondary has five wires; two blue, two red, and one red/white. I think I remember Alembic charging me about twice that much! |
