I want to build a valve compressor.

I don't know how good it is, but the ART mono tube compressor which I understand has very limited adjustment capabilities is on sale at zzounds.com for $69 or so.

Bombay,i don't know,i've never tried one;always SS.But the Peavey looks good.  
Ted the Art is may be cheap in the States,but in France,i don't know.

You might try looking at www.paia.com and check out a box called the tube head. It might work for guitar.

Thanks for that link Carlo.  
I believe there are more complicated units based on variable-mu pentodes. And, simpler ones based on using a power amp to light a small bulb which shines on a photoresistor (like the original Joe Meek).  
Ther is a section on valve compressors in the old Radiotron Designer's Handbook.
