The variable mu topology using a 6L7 or 6L7G has very high distortion and doesn't sound very good. I know this because I have built and measured it. You can find a schematic for this type of circuit in the RC-19 RCA tube manual that has been reprinted. Its shown as a volume expander but can be easily changed to a compressor.

I am currently working on a tube based compressor/clean boost pedal and when I'm finished I might post it on the net. Its built in a 7.4 x 7.4 x 2.5 Hammond die cast box.

I may need to find a site that would be willing to host it since I not sure I want to deal with the webmaster thing. Maybe AMZ or GEO, etc? I haven't really looked into what it takes to start a site. Is there a lot of work involved?
