If you're meaning the "talking guitar" sound, not much needed. Get a small amplifier or a midrange horn speaker driver and arrange to couple the sound from the thing into a plastic tube you hold in your teeth. You mouth the words into a mike while playing. Midrange horn drivers work nicely because you can readily get plastic tubing to fit over the driver output. With a small speaker, you need a plastic funnel or some such to neck it down to a tube.

to add to this from one of the books i have at home. simple take a horn tweeter cut the horn off so you have just the driver use a nylon tube to connect to the driver then run the tub up the mike stand and off so you can put the tube into your mouth. the mike well pick up the sound... i have heard of running fuzz/distortion before the talk box too but keep the amp down to low wattage....you don't want to viberate your teeth out

now this is all par-a-phrase from the book have never tried it so let me know what you come up with

Can you use the output of say a Deluxe reverb or other small tube amp to power it?

nic,

You can use the output of almost any amp, including a Deluxe. You should try to match the impedance of amp output with the driver you're using. At one time I was using a 100 watt tube Peavey amp (Mace) to power a talk box. Keep the volume down, of course, or you'll blow up the driver. Someone suggested sawing the horn of a tweeter, as was suggested by Anderton in GP during the '70's. A midrange driver will sound better. You can get a midrange driver that works great for a talk box driver from MCM or Parts Express for $20-30 us dollars.
