pedal project...
My two main pedals are a TS9 and an MXR distortion. I was thinking it would be cool to put both into a single box. Any suggestions as to mods I should do to the MXR circuit? Or anything else that would be useful before i start?

Aron has some mods for the mxr dist.+ (which I assume is what were talking about) by Alfonso Hermida (?) I think. Also, TS mods are there in abundance, Aron has most of them at least linked.
Use an alumin(i)um box, watch out for groundloops.
You might want to think about wether you want to use batteries or an adapter, though keep in mind a built-in transformer can produce a hell of a lot of trouble (I wouldn't do that, at the most I'd use a regular adapter with a regulator in the effectbox)
Mod them both to True Bypass, of course, and use RG Keen's Milennium 2 to get LED action.
Do you stack the pedals (as in both on at the same time) or alternate them? If alternate, two DPDT's will switch between effects, and give an over-all bypass. Stacked, you might want to implement RG's effect-switcher, to be able to drive the TD with the MXR or the other way around. Maybe throw in an effectsloop between the two pedals, whatever the mind can come up with. But then again, you might just want to keep things simple....

Son of a screamer
Has anyone tried the son of a screamer? I was wondering how much it sounds like a TS. I want the TS sound but is all the input and output buffering necessary to get this sound? It would be nice to use the minimal components as Jack's design requires...

I have an original TS-9 from the early 80s to compare it with and they sound much the same. If you are looking for that general type of overdrive sound then it should do fine for you. If you are looking to make an exact duplicat of the TS-808 sound then you need to buy one of the current Ibanez models and mod it to get the very minor change in sound of the output buffers.

I've never received a single e-mail from anyone who built it complaining about the lack of the transistor buffers.

Sort of off topic
Jack,
Whats your opinion on omitting the I + O buffers on Boss type pedals? I'm gonna start working on a SLOW GEAR clone, elimitnating the switching circut. I'm assuming the I + O buffers on Boss pedals could be eliminated as well, but could be wrong...

Just a quick look at the SlowGear says that you should leave the buffers in place; they are an integral part of making the circuit work.

The Boss SD-1 is very similar to the TS series so you could delete the buffers from it.

Re: Son of a screamer
nic,

It sounds great. Easy-to-build and very much like a TS (if that is the sound you like).

I have a sound sample at:

To give you a little idea.
