Adrian Re: Clean Boosters/semi-rant
Of course, if by transparent you mean "not too distorted " then give the basic, one stage MiniBooster a tap. It really isn't transparent but sounds pretty damn good.

Many thanks to all of you. To answer Mark specifically, I didnt make my point particularly clear. I'm not after a glassy clean boost, but one that will 'tip' an edge of OD NMV Marshall into crunch, without adding a lot of fizz or tonal colouration. Obviously this means that I'm looking at 'clean' boosters containing no clipping diodes or filtering.
(Think Reef-style crunch, but not at ear-splitting volumes!)

Then the Dual will be just what you are wanting, even with only a single battery.

The Dual Booster may sound better in this application if the low end is rolled off by changing C5 and C6 to 1uF or even 0.56uF.

(BTW, none of the rants by anyone were directed at you; we just got slightly off track :)

best regards, Jack

Thanks Jack. I best go and build a dual booster.
Incidently, I like rants! Weird, wonderfull and hopefully useful new ideas can be generated by our collective streams of consciousness!

Thanks for the clarification (no pun intended).

You might also want to consider simply using an EQ stompbox for the task, since many can adjust overall level. Not only that, but sometimes the threshold of clipping is approached too easily in some bands (or not easily enough in others), and the band-adjustability of an EQ can deliver the crunch you want, the way you want it. I used to use a 6-band MXR in exactly that manner for a number of years.

Thanks for your reply Mark. I've got a Boss GE-7 lying around doing nothing at present, so I'll give that a go. From what I've read, graphics are good at picking out key frequencies (around 800Hz-1KHz?)which, when boosted, can create crunch and added harmonics. Truth or fiction?

Thanks,

Chris

GFR

Slash uses a GE-7 to boost his Marshall for solos. David Gilmour seems to use GE-7's before and after each single fuzz box he's got on his rig.
