It might bug the guy that you are using pedals at all! Jam sessions with oppinionated purist guys like him aren't very fun.

Silly me.. and I thought it was about the music! ;-)  
 
(ps: FWIW I haven't managed to hurt an amp YET with a pedal, and it ain't for lack of trying!! If anything, most pedals roll off highs and lows and actually protect the amp to a small degree IMO.)
