Billy Gibbons' tone on Rhythmeen and XXX ? Anybody know how Billy Gibbons gets his distortion tone on Rhythmeen and on the latest album XXX ? It's big and fat but has no pick attack. It kind of sounds like a lot of compression that squashes the pick attack and the notes just seem to get squeezed out, very odd tone but I like it. |

I've read in a magazine he used a Bixonic Expandora with the 2 switches 'on' (overdrive AND distorsion) |

| Mike shaw | Don't forget that a lot of the fatness comes from being detuned. Billy tuned WAY low, like maybe to B! Also, in the latest Guitar World (I think) he states that he used really LIGHT strings and low tuning. (More Reverend BS?). You should check it out, it's the first interview with Gibbons that I've seen where he actually talks so you can understand him! Mike |

| Ryan Lussier | What makes the tone unique is his combination of Direct and Mic'd signals. For both Rythmeen and XXX he used a two ten plexi combo close mic'd AND a Marshal JMP Preamp straight to the board. He has said this creates a very slight delay and a strange anomoly occurs:low notes and high notes will hit tape at different intervals. This would explain the "snaky" sound. In addition to light strings tuned down and his unmistakable trademark "touch" make for a very interesting tone! |

| Leman Russ | dont know about you, but I can listen to it on record, but when playing with a coin, well, its like chewing on tin foil! |
