I had the _exact_ same problem with my Deluxe Memory Man. Contrary to seemingly almost everyone on the planet, I don't like the JRC4558 for clean signals. Inside a TS series pedal it's fine.  
 
I replaced the JRC with a TL072 and the problem went away. The DMM had an annoying brittle sound before putting in the TL072.

Does this mean there is an opamp in the NS-2 I  
could change and possibly make an improvement?

Do you use the NS-2 like it's supposed to? I.e. guitar connected to IN, amp connected to OUT and the effect chain connected in the SEND/RECIEVE loop. I'm not sure if this will change anything but it might be worth a try.

There may be or maybe not. I wonder if all you need to do is mellow the tone out by putting a lowpass filter in there at the end of the chain...
