Fuzzbox on American Woman??
This ones been really bugging me. Does anyone know which fuzz box Randy Bachman used on the Guess Who's American Woman (And maybe These eyes as well)? I know that later on he used a Garnet Herzog (anyone got a schem for one of those?) but I think on American Woman he's using a true fuzztone. Any Ideas??

I was always under the impression that "American Woman" WAS the definitive Herzog sound, or at least that was the rumour in them days.

What I'd like to know was if the Herzog was a solid state, tube, or hybrid device. I've never actually seen one.

I've seen a few of these (It looks like a small Amp Head, there's one on the cover of the Aspen Pitman Tube Amp Book) The first ones had no in out switching but the later one's did. It is a Tube Unit though I couldn't swear whether it's 100%. My memory of them is that it was an early attempt at getting a valve based overdrive sound with stacked preamp distortion (Like a Boogie). It still seems to me listening carefully that the American Woman guitar is a fuzzbox. I'm sure that I might even detect a hint of an Octaver effect in there. John

I'm pretty sure that he uses a Colorsound Tonebender for the lead in "American Woman". His Tonebender may have been modified just a tad for the "octaving" but I can get that same effect with mine if I fiddle with the knobs just right.
