Mark Hammer Re: MXR Dist+
I have enough FX history behind me to know that it's a big world, and there is bound to be something that is not to my tastes. That being said, I can usually think of a use for almost anything (even the Boss HM-2 my nephew gave me).

This Dist+, however, was so NOT to my liking that I was sure I must have done something wrong. Your comments, and those of the others, have swayed that somewhat. I'm still wondering if I accidentally stuck the diodes on the wrong side of the 10k resistor. I'll see...once I finish the 5 days' worth of errands I have.

Mark FWIW the only dist. of the mxr+ type I like is the rat. The rat has fixed freg breakpoint where the MXR goes up in freg with gain. I have a ross (mxr copy)that I increased the cap in series with the dist pot to 100uf for a full range fuzz.

I was only trying to warn you about using some of your spare time in something so similar in rough sound to HM2.

And hasn't the "color mixer", btw, that smooths a bit the Boss one.

Someone said that EVH used an MXR+ on the first 2 albums. I have a Plexi and tried it. It sounded absolutely horrible. I almost vomited. There's NO way in hell.

I've read on several occasions that Randy Rhoads used one on Crazy Train. Cool song and the distortion tone, though not to my liking, seems to fit in that context.

Hi Everybody,

FWIW,I have 2 MXR Dist + pedals, one script and one block logo(both original)and IMO the script one is a little smoother, but I believe there is a difference between the 2 Dist +'s circuit wise, can anybody confirm this?,I've never actually looked at them side by side.

And I agree with Mark that they dont have a great deal of output, mine you have to put the volume on about 3/4 full to get same vol.as bypass vol.Having said that the first one I had was way louder than others I've had, harder distortion, and better sustain, but looking back at that I'd say that maybe the diodes were taken out.

But all in all, personally I am not fond of them much, but there are people who swear by them.

Your comment about the dist vs bypass volume is bang on what I get. So maybe I DIDN'T put the 10k resistor in the wrong spot.

Conceivably the difference between boxes that you have is simply a function of differences in voltage drop for the specific diodes used, even though they are the same part. I find differences of as much as 100mV between diodes of the same type on a regular basis, and that can make a big audible difference in output volume.

So I guess it is as unappealing a distortion box as I thought. The Si diode version sounds a bit better and louder though. I suspect a cap in parallel with the diodes ought to make it behave better.

Thanks for providing comment based on an authentic unit.
