Mark: the best one of these "Op-amp feeds back to back

diode"-type circuits I've heard is the ProCo Rat. The Rat may have more of the type of sound you're looking for.

Just a thought...

Mark,

I built this a couple years ago, with switchable diodes. The gain on mine is good, especially with pairs of diodes in series. Mine sounds great to my ears. I really like it with red LEDs.

Thanks to all for your help, your corroboration, and suggestions. I think I'll take another look at my handiwork this weekend, since it seems like I've done something wrong, although I suspect it is but one component (my hunch is the 10k resistor is on the wrong side of the diode pair).

It would seem, from all the comments, that this is most decidedly the kind of box where a rotary switch is called for. The tonal impact of different types/combinations of diodes+caps, and the fact that they can all by selected from with a SP switch (e.g., a 12PST rotary), makes it a breeze to select different voicings.

To paraphrase Richard Dreyfus in "Jaws", I think we're gonna need a bigger box.

Mark, they are loud enough, but they don't sound any good.

Somekind of too primitive, noisy, unrefined...

I built one a month ago, when I got an original from a frien to be repaired. Them both sound as bad (to me)

I used Ge, as the original had them too I believe.

I now only use, among some other real vintage, Shaka Bradda (very very very slightly modified and adjusted to my taste following Aron indications) and a homebrew ProCo Rat. There's also at the end of the chain a phaser with all the opamps (4) JRC4550 old good ones :) and an Ibanez Double Sound fuzzwah at the begining.

I know you don't *need* my opinion at all, but just to say I don't like D+... Compared with the other two: SB III and ProCo Rat.

4558, I meant to say.

Sorry about that.

John,

Did you catch that unfortunate mistake that I made with the .1uF vs .01uF cap in the MiniBooster of the SBIII? basically it will make the pedal cleaner and brighter.

I am so glad that you still like the pedal!

Aron.

I can't remember right now... (I'll have to look at it next time I open the box)

But it sounds so great as it is.

Yes, beside a good clean strat through a good valve amp,

if I have to choose a pedal to "unclean" and "faten" it a bit, SB III is my type of pedal.

It makes a ss amp sound good, and a valve one, sound much better.

To me, itīs an incredible allaround effect.
