Clean boot in Win95 w/ Startup Cop SpeedRacer had mentioned a utility that comes with Windows 98 that allows you turn on and off various programs when your computer boots up. To add that capability to Win95 or Windows NT there is a brand new PC Magazine Utility called "Startup Cop" that allows you to enable, disable or remove most of the programs and dll's loaded into memory. You can save configurations of programs to enable or disable to speed up the process. As a safety feature, before you can permanently remove a program you need to reboot your computer to make sure that it will run without that program. After it does reboot successfully, you then have access to the "hidden" skull'n'crossbones icon to nuke that program. (I finally got rid of that stupid AOL Instant Messenger icon in my system tray!) While a computer dedicated to recording is still the best option, Startup Cop is a great help and (like all PC Mag utilities) is free: http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/utilities/1999.html Steve Ahola P.S. In the past you had to register on-line with PC Mag/ZD Net to be able to download their programs; I'm not sure if that policy is still in effect... |
