The evolution of my home studio I have been recording at home for the last 5 years or so. Like all of you..... I have made several graduations in equipment over the years. I went from a Yamaha 4-trac to an 8-track fostex model 80 and have finally ended up witha PC based system. I am running Steinberg's VST in conjunction with an Event darla card. I am running a Spirit mixer and a Stewart PA-100 power amp for all my output returns and MIDI gear. I also have an external SCSI drive to write to. I have to say that this is an incredible time for home recording. Never has there been so many great choices for home recording. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in this field and I look forward to learning and sharing some helpful info! I think this forum is a great idea! Benjamin |

I had the pleasure of using Cakewalk Pro Audio at a friends house a year or so ago with a regular garden variety PC sound card. Although I could only record two tracks at a time, it did a great job of playing back a bunch of tracks simultaneously. 16 was no problem for his Pentium 133 computer. You can imagine how hard it was to come up with 16 tracks of various guitar noises. I'd sure be interested in a semi-inexpensive card that would work with cakewalk and do 4 analog inputs. |

Chris, I believe that Digital audio labs makes a 4 in 4 out card for around $250. Benjamin. |

Benjamin, The thing that's scared me away from digital audio cards in the past has been the drivers -- i.e. Windows incompatibilities and crashes/lockups. Has the field improved in this area in the past couple of years or are they still temperamental? |

Joe, The key is to buy a recording program and audio card in which the two companies interact and support each others software and drivers. That was my choice for using Cubase VST and the Darla audio card. Steinberg and Event have teamed up so to speak......I have not had any trouble with the current setup I have. P.S. Stick with the big companies so you will be able to continually upgrade your drivers and other related software. Benjamin. |

It also helps if you dedicate the PC JUST for music recording/production. I mean, if you don't use it for game playing, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet access, database managing... GFR |

GFR, Yes it is better if you can dedicate your PC to just recording and programs that are associated with recording(IE audio editors, direct X plugins ect.) Benjamin. |
