    As for adjusting truss rods I agree with the suggestion to visit your local luthier with a few guitars that are out-of-whack to see how it's done. If he has a lot of business you might want to set up an appointment so that you can watch him do it and see for yourself the tensions he uses. There is no way you can gauge the tension/torque required by reading a book or watching a video...  
 
    The local luthier here uses Meguiar's (for cars). To clean up a scratched finish he recommends their #4 Heavy-Cut Cleaner (less abrasive than rubbing compounds but you still need to be careful). I don't have a bottle of their polish handy to give you the number for that...
