| 60's relic | Gibson EB series bass tone Is there any way to modify the wiring in the old Gibson EB3 bass to give it more top end ? The tone is very bassey, period,on the neck pickup, and the bridge pickup is midrangey-"boxey"in tone.Combinations dont change much-is this just the limitations of those big humbuckers used on these models?Any suggestions? |

My opinion is that the humbuckers cause the EB series of basses to growel. It is what keeps the instrument from having a more 'pointy' tone. Another factor is that these instruments are short scale and therefore produce fewer harmonics so simply replaceing or modifying the pickups may not help much. |

| art | There's a big inductor coil in series with the pickup which takes off the high end... does your bass have a 4-way rotary switch? One position is the neck pu without the inductor I think... I had one of these basses and was never happy with the sound-- you get a choice of either too thin, or so bassy humans can't hear it. I found that using the very bassy sound with some distortion to add a bit of punch was the best compromise I could achieve, but a better solution might have been to use a huge amp and play with the bassy sound very loud. In the end I sold it and bought a Fender Jazz, which I found more versatile. cheers, art |
