The JRC chip I am putting into my TS9 has a small indentation in one corner. Does this indentation identify pin #1? Does the pin numbering then go 1,2,3,4,....and then, back to the bottom opposite the indentation,5,6,7,8?

Yes.  
 
That's pin 1, pin 8 is directly across the package from pin 1.
