Hello, R.G. The solder mask used on some of our boards here at work is a photoimageable wet solder mask, PC401 from Haven Corp. The stuff is painted on the board and then photoimaged and etched. Maybe you could get a sample from your board fab house? It may be easier to apply than ironing the dry film mask.

 Dry film resist and solder mask
I think I could probably do it, I just don't think your average board-making Joe could. This is a leftover from my early attempts to spray negative acting photo resist on boards for photo imaging. Yuck. Never did work right.  
 
Dry film has many advantages if it is even semi-adaptable to  
the home shop.  
 
... but I remain open to ideas.
