Re: Gus Smalley: 3 Trans Fuzz Questions

Your original schematic shows a 100k (audio) pot for final output level adjust. Your note says "Try down to 50k audio". Aron's Rocket schematic doesn't specify volume pot value at all. What's the best value, or does it depend more on what's connected further down the line?

I realize that you chose an MPSA18 for it's gain vs. noise qualities, especially for the input device. Next 2 transistors aren't as critical. How does a 2N5088 compare?

I used a 100K pot for volume.

For the transistors I used 2N5088 and it think it sounds great.

I happened to be talking with Gus off-line about his transistor chioces. He actually hadn't tried a 2N5088. His main concern was low noise on the high gain input stage, and obtained the desired performance with some MPS-A18s. Subsequent two transistors aren't critical since they're configured for low gain.

I guess the 2N5088s you have are good low noise, high gain transistors. Have you found a preferred brand/supplier, or have all your samples been fairly consistent for this device number? I have some good MPS-A18s, but I'd also like to try the 5088s.

Thanks,

Doc,

I believe I bought my 2N5088 transistors from Mouser. They are great, sound good and have consistent performance.

I'm going to try the MPS-A18s though and see if they are any better.

Gotta love those Transistor Sockets!
