Small Stone Volume Problems
I have a question concearning one of the new sovtek small stone phasers. The only mod that has been done to it is true bypass switching . While using it I have noticed that when I kick it on I loose a lot of my volume(particularly when I am running a distorted guitar signal). When I compared this to my ADA Flanger or Boss Super Phaser I realized that I don't loose any volume with these pedals, in both of the cases there is a noticeable boost in volume which is very beneficial, because when your signal is modulating it is harder to pull out of the mix of a rock band. I was wondering if someone knows of a way that I could boost the output of my small stone so I dont have to kick on my EQ pedal for a volume boost every time I use it.

Thanks,
John

I have modded a # of small stones by adding a gain boost after the effect section. Effect on has the PS and booster. effect off is signal in to out. Add R.G.s bypass and you have a great pedal. Keep in mind if the person uses a ~p~~p~ effect loop and you use an inverting booster you can have cancelation of signal.

Gus,

How do I do this. I know enough to identify parts and read a schematic, but I do not know enough to add a gain boost. If anybody could help me with schemaics, plans, or a description of how to do this it would be much appreciated.

Look in the archives here for SHO Super Hard On very good little mosfet booster amp (gain of 1 on up inverts). build a jfet booster go to the library check books on opamps The OpAmp cookbook by W. Jung is a good one. Look for noninverting amps gain of 1 on up.

Another thing to do is change the wires to a thicker type. The wires that Sovtek used inside the new SS are hair thin. Its a wonder they can even carry a current!! There was a short discussion about this about two months ago in the archives. These boxes are also know for their ticking and swishing even when "off". Changing the wires should take care of those SS characteristics also.
