Orange Squeezer Follow-up: J. Green/R.G.
John: have you had a chance to breadboard the Orange Squeezer with a full-wave rectifier? How does it sound?

R.G.: I've only seen pictures of the Orange Squeezer. Is there a volume knob on it or did you add this to the circuit?

Mark Hammer: Thanks for the insight into the circuit. I've found, with my guitar, that the level of gain seems to be just about right. I also like the amount of low end that the Orange Squeezer puts out. The only problem I really had with the circuit (i.e. the breathing/over-reaction) was fixed by replacing the 1.5k resistor with a 1k pot + 470 ohm resistor in series, then backing off on the pot. When I get my hands on a TL072, I'll try that in place of the TL082 (as per your suggestion) but, again, I notice no noise with the TL082.

To all: This circuit has basically replaced the Rangemaster in my signal chain. I consider it an every-day effect, not like, say, a Tychobrahe Octavia (which is fun but not an every-other-song type sound, at least not for me). The Orange Squeezer's still on a breadboard, though, so I can't gig with it yet! :-)

It was on what looked like a factory print of the schematic. I've never seen one either. I suspect that it may have been an internal trimpot as well - you know, get the bypass/effect loudnesses balanced and then never touch it.

In any case, for my use, I'd put a real volume control on it, as I wouldn't plug it directly into the guitar.

Anybody got a REAL one?

I ordered a batch of Lime Squeezer circuit boards, but it may be a couple of weeks before they're available.

I had an Orange squeezer and all it had outside the box was a switch, there was not a volume control. I couldn't tell you if there was a trim pot inside and I don't have the thing any more. Mark

Yes, I have a real one.

It's a trim pot in the Squeezer. There is not control on the outside of the box at all.

Just a toggle to turn it on and off.

Would an external control be more useful, or an internal trimpot in a clone?

I'm not sure if you're asking Aron or me, but I plan on building mine with an external volume control. I wouldn't dream of building an effect without one.

An external control would be useful but I used my Orange squeezer for years and never missed it.
