Kay Fuzztone
I've been trying to build a clone of the Kay Fuzztone (Orange Kay to you Daniel Lanois fans) for what seems an eternity here.

It never works.

I've resorted to building the circuit small bit by bit and here I am. I have the first two transistors in, and their respective connections to +9v and ground. I put a signal into the input and tap off the output of the second transistor and I get a tiny signal out of it, not a preamped signal. Then I disconnect the battery and the signal gets louder (but not as loud as bypassed signal).

Is it possible that my ECG reference pinout for an ECG 199 is incorrect? Am I using the wrong transistor to replace the 2SC644S?

Who can help me?

is the schematic incorrect?

Post the DC voltages of the pins on the transistors.

Hi. I'm the guy who sent the schematic to Aron. I believe the schematic is correct, but I will double check it with the one he posted (I only double checked it with the hand-drawn one I sent). I will also check the voltages on the transistors, but give me a few days--It belongs to our other guitarist. If I help you out with it, do you think you can help me? The original is in a rocker pedal, but has no level or output pot. What could I do to give it more output? It is an incredible sounding pedal and is well worth duplicating, but it has a very low output signal. It is completely unusable on stage unless something is done about that.
Aron, are you there? I haven't bugged you in a while, but when I sent you the schem you said you'd try to help me out with that. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

Hi Rob!

I can make ANY pedal much louder :-)

I haven't prototyped the Kay although that's on the list.

I'm sure I could bias the transistor to give more gain OR put an LBP-1 on the end to boost it a lot, or put a FET booster or put a MiniBooster on there or something else.

I'm going on a short gig off-island so when I get back I will try and prototype it and figure out what's weird about the circuit.

Aron
