Flying Pan Questions...
I have a couple flying pan questions.
1) How do you do a true bypass mod? remember that it
has two switches,
one for phase on/off and one for pan on/off. I'm not TOO
great at
electronics so give me slow answers..also, don't screw me
up! :) this
was an expensive pedal!

2) this worries me...
last night I used my bass through the flying pan for the first
time..
it seemed to work fine...
now originally when I used the pan with guitar on the
distortion channel
on my amp you heard a little squeal when it got the the
bottom of the
phase and started its way up again. i didn't really care cuz I
just used
it on clean and crunch channels anyway, but this morning i
was playing
with it and it seems to be doing the same thing on clean
now..
does this have anything to do with me using the bass with it
or what?
does anyone know what the problem is? if so, how do I fix
it?

(1)Assuming you want to true-bypass both outputs, you need at least a 3PDT, or a 4PDT for stereo-true-bypass with indicator.

If you think of ordinary DPDT bypass switches in SPDT modules, one modules pole switches the input jack to either the effect input throw or the bypass wire throw. On the opposite end, the output module switches the output jack pole between the effect output throw and the bypass wire throw.

If you now want a second effect output jack, you add another module, which selects either the second effect output or the bypass wire.

(2) I can't guess exactly what is going on from your description. On older pedals like this, it could be several things. I don't thing playing bass through it injured it, but it may be that the cumulative time being used is showing up a wearing out part - most likely an electrolytic. If it were mine, I'd replace every electrolytic in it, then worry about fine points.

I keep thinking about building one of these - is the sound good?

Yeah but as I said it didn't do this at first, only this morning.

Maybe. This doesn't seriously alter the sound in any way does it? just updating old parts right?

It sounds orgasmically good when it isn't doing what mine's doing now.

Request for dish
I have read about these things and their acid-inspired (sometime psychotomimetic) qualities, and have noted their rarity in Vintage Guitar magazine ads (I asume this is a testament to their "keeper" qualities and low production volume), but have never seen enough detail on them to get a grasp of what's under the hood. So, how about some dish?

For starters, what controls does it have, and what do they do? What outputs does it have? Is it battery powered? Can you give us a chip listing?

Years ago, I used to play with a setup in which I had a slow-rotation Leslie on my left, and a slow pulse tremolo'd amp on my right (out of sync with the Leslie). The effect was also akin to carnal pleasure, much like the FP (and many of the rapid pans that made Hendrix's Axis: Bold as Love and Rainy Day - Dream away an aesthetic delight). Didn't do much for my ability to remember words to songs or chord changes (trashed it, in fact), but it sure was fun.

I'm surprised it didn't pop up in the reissue dreamlist.

It did Mark. It was first on my list. Maybe RG can work up a package????? : )

I'll add it to the list - but the list is pretty deep. I assume you or Mark will volunteer to do the prototype board build?
