Is the NJM5532 ok?
Is the NJM5532 acceptable to use in place of a NE5532? After reading how bad the NJM4558 sounds, I'm afraid to try the NJM5532.

Try it. The sound of the NJM4558 specifically in the screamer is a special case, that particular 4558 design just happens to have certain extremely specific problems with the setup in the screamer. The problems have to do with recovery from saturation in the gain change when the clipping diodes start and stop conducting - very specialized.

The NJM4558 is not in general a bad sounding chip, at least no worse than any other 4558 or 741 type, and NJM parts in general are not bad sounding, especially in normal audio circuits.

If your question is about the sound in the screamer circuit, try the 5532, as well as these other alternates: LM833, OP275, TLC2202.
