Echoplex Problems 1. I have a Echoplex tape echo (transistor model) that generates badly distorted echoes. The problem is worse the larger the input signal (obviously I guess). The problem is in the record circuitry somewhere as opposed to the playback circuitry and I don't think its the record level potentiometer. Any suggestions on how to track down the problem? 2. Does anybody have as Echoplex cassette winding tips they can pass on? Everytime I wind one it works for a while (minutes, days, weeks) then tightens up and binds the system. Thanks, Craig |

1. Make sure your heads are properly cleaned and demagmetized. If that doesn't help, you'll need to do some signal tracing to find the source of the distortion. 2. If you're using ordinary reel-to-reel type recording tape, you will have problems. The tape you need has a slippery coating on the back that allows it to slide against itself in the cartridge without binding. It's the same stuff that's used in broadcast and 8-track carts. |

If you're going to get tape, check out a flea market that sells 8-tracks and buy the most *unpopular* tape you can find (Although this may present problems, given the taste of traditional 8-track buyers. Among the unpopular 8-tracks I own and cherish are a few Zappa albums, a John Fogerty solo album I haven't ever seen again, and some terrific Bill Evans.). This ought to make it less worn. 8-track tape is standard width tape. Thickness varies, however, so try to find something that only packs a few songs. This should probably give you thicker tape than an 8-track with "The Living Guitars Play Every Song By the Beatles... Really Slow", or "The Grateful Dead Tune Up". |
