MXR mods
Hi, I've just built an MXR Distortion +, and was wondering is anyone has ever incorporated a rudimentary tone knob into the circuit? Nothing fancy - just to roll off the highs if so desired (like the tone knob on a guitar). Where in the cicuit would this go, and what value pot should be used? Thanks.

I've never done it, but if I were going to put a tone knob in, I would get a simple tone control circuit ( probably from Leper's Circuit Archive ) and put it in right after the 1uf cap that hangs on the output of the 741. This would be between the 10k resistor and 1uf cap. Thats where I would start and just hear what happens. Sounds like a lot of fun, good luck, Christian

Done it.

There are three generic ways to "tame" the rasp of a Dist +.

1) Put a cap in the feedback loop of the op-amp, or put
several of them, linked to a toggle switch (the best compromise
is a SPDT On-Off-On, 3 position, centre-off, switch). This
gives you three preset "voicings".

2) Stick a cap between the input to the volume control and ground,
and use the same toggle-switching scheme as per the feedback loop.

Are these two different? Yup. The first limits what frequencies
will be boosted enough to be clipped by the diodes. The second
simply trims back the output level of the upper harmonics. Try em
both and see what you like better.

3) The third way is to use a variable tone control. You can also do
this with virtualy any fuzz (I've done it with a Fuzz Face, and the
results are highly desirable.). Stick a resistor in series with the
output volume control; say, about 1/10 the pot value. Now, just ahead
of that, stick a 10k pot, with a cap going to ground as below.

I'm assuming you mean a treble/bass adjustment.

The best tone adjustment I have seen for a D+ is to put in an adjustable
soft-clipping control.
