"My question is this: would it work at all if that cap was reversed? It did seem to work fine but I wasn't really crazy about on-board electronics. Question #2, regular transistors come in NPN and PNP flavors; is there likewise a reverse polarity type of FET? Maybe the E230
is of oppposite polarity to the 2N4302 "

It would probably work if the polarity was reversed since there is likely only a volt or two of bias on the source of the FET - but not recommended.

There are two basic "flavors" of jfets, the n-fet and the p-fet. The n-fet is much more common and uses a positive voltage supply. If E230 were a p-fet then you would have to use a negative voltage supply with the circuit shown.
