Tone Burst Generator? Inexpensive Solution
In repairing some FX pedals, sometimes the mfg. specs require a Tone Burst of so many seconds on and so many seconds off. ( Mainly the delay pedals)

Does anyone know of a good Tone Burst Generator that I can buy or build that will perform msec 'on' and 'off' times and that will not take a chunk out of my pocket book?

Thanks,

Look in one of the many 555 books. You can use a 556 with one half gating the osc on the other half. One IC small amout of parts simple math for tha osc and duty cycle.

If I had to do it, I'd be real tempted to just use the soundcard on my computer...

I found a simple home made tone burst unit at a car boot sale. You plug in an external signal source, and it has a binary counter which you can make count 4, 8, 16 etc.
(divide down). Then the output from the counter goes to a cmos switch. So the audio input is switched alternatively on & off for 4, 8, 16 cycles etc.
A problem is that the actual 'time' on & off varies with freq, but you could easily overcome that by using a dedicated osc for the timer. An advantage is that it has 'zero crossing' switching.
Anyone using this, take a separate continupus output for scope sync.

I designed a simple two-transistor, 9V battery-operated, 1kHz oscillator that has a variable-output level (up to 1VRMS, or 2.828V peak-to-peak, into a 10K load), and very good temperature and supply-voltage stability. You could turn it into a tone burst generator by either gating the output with a CMOS switch (like a CD4066 or CD4053 or something) under control of a 555 timer or other square-wave source, or by turning on and off the oscillator with a third transistor under control of the square wave source. It should cost only a few dollars to build.

If you would like a copy of the PDF format schematic, let me know and I'll email a copy to you.

Thanks guys, I like the CMOS gated output idea. I am going to work on building one.
